Altrusa seeks to make Door County a better community in which to live through its commitment to improving and increasing literacy for area children and their families. Altrusa of Door County is involved in numerous community service projects, including (1) Back to School Fair annually to meet the need of children and families in the community to be ready for the first day of school (class-specific school supplies, backpacks, toiletries, school spirit wear, socks, underwear and shoes are provided to the extent of available funding - almost 600 children supported last year); (2) Born-to-Read parents of newborns recieve two board books and a poem to encourage early reading to the child at home (books are provided in English or Spanish); (3) Fundraising Projects for Altrusa's many literacy-based projects and services that include staffing area festival booths, collecting grocery store receipts and the annual "Holiday Extravaganza": (4) Literacy for the Blind currently transcribing children's books into Braille to be donated to the Wisconsin Center for the Blind and Visually Impaired; (5) Make a Difference Day Project where age appropriate books are donated to Habitat For Humanity's new home owner's family; (6) Mary Louise Kiehnau Women's Scholarship are provided to women in Door County planning to enroll in additional education to enhance their lives and employment opportunities: (7) Reading Friends volunteer to read in Door County's early childhood and kindergarten classrooms, and the children are then given the books to take home and enjoy, with one copy staying in the classroom or the library for future reading; (8) Senior Reading Program delivers current periodicals to local assisted living facilities and the Sturgeon Bay Senior Citizen Center each month; and (9) Waiting Room Reading of children's books donated to local area pediatric waiting rooms for children to enjoy.Altrusans
